Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu met with a research group specializing in cross-strait relations led by Professor Yasuhiro Matsuda from the University of Tokyo Sept. 11 in Taipei City.

According to the MOFA, the two sides exchanged views on the Taiwan Strait, Taiwan-U.S. relations, response to disinformation and cognitive warfare, China’s controversial new version of its national map and its authoritarian expansion.

Wu said that the research panel is a major platform for long-term observation of Taiwan cross-strait issues, politics, economics and regional security. With Taiwan’s rich experience in tackling cognitive warfare, Wu suggested that the two countries can strengthen cooperation in this field.

The minister also emphasized that Taiwan is reinforcing its self-defense and training military personnel in asymmetric warfare. Taiwan will continue to cooperate with like-minded countries such as Japan to respond to China’s regional expansion.

Wu added that in recent years, Japan has actively developed military deployment in its southwest Ryukyu island chain, while the U.S. has intensified cooperation with Australia and the Philippines, both of which may deter China from starting aggression.

In response, the delegates indicated that they have gained a deeper understanding of Taiwan-U.S. relations, the current situation in the Indo-Pacific, the importance of Taiwan’s role in cross-strait security and the regional threat posed by China, the MOFA said. (POC-E)
