A Ukrainian kindergarten rebuilt by Taiwan and Lithuania reopened Aug. 24 in the city of Irpin, reflecting the commitment of the two like-minded partners to boosting the Eastern European country’s social resilience.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Foreign Minister Roy Chun Lee announced Taiwan’s intention to donate US$5 million to a project led by Lithuania’s Central Project Management Agency to assist with reconstruction in Ukraine during a news conference held June 1 at the partner nation’s Parliament. The school, named Kindergarten Ruta, is the joint project’s first undertaking, with Taiwan contributing 1.2 million euros (US$1.3 million).

Set to accommodate 400 children, the three-story school is equipped with modern facilities and revamped playgrounds displaying the ROC (Taiwan) national flag, the MOFA said. The inauguration was of particular significance as it coincided with Ukraine’s Independence Day, it added.

The MOFA said children are the future of a nation, but many schools in Ukraine have been destroyed following Russia’s invasion. No students should be deprived of their right to education because of authoritarian aggression, the ministry said, adding that the rebuilding reflects Taiwan’s traditional belief that people should care for the children of others as they do for their own.

Taiwan and Ukraine both face authoritarian aggression and coercion, the MOFA said. The government remains committed to working with Lithuania and other members of the free world to show their unwavering support for Ukraine and help facilitate its recovery, the ministry added. (SFC-E)
