The National Science Council launched the Taiwan Chip-based Industrial Innovation Program in 2023, combining the advantages of generative AI and semiconductor chip design and manufacturing to benefit Taiwan’s technology industry. National Science and Technology Council Minister Wu Tsung-tsong, announced that following careful planning, the first overseas base for training international chip design personnel will soon be established in Prague.

Wu explained that the facility would fulfill four functions; deepening overseas cooperation and exchange as well as assisting in industrial applications; expanding personnel resources and opportunities for the Taiwan chip design industry; accelerating exchanges in international start-ups through diversifying communication channels; and assisting enterprises in linking with international industry-academia partners and the global market.

Europe’s solid science education and the potential for high-quality master and doctoral research personnel make it a perfect location for the first overseas chip design base. Prague, capital of the Czech Republic, enjoys close proximity to other European universities; it has a level of internationalization and thus great potential for future development, the minister said.

The project will not only open up more international development opportunities for Taiwan, but also promote mutual prosperity and benefits between Taiwan and the international semiconductor industry chain, becoming a driving force for sustainable innovation in the global semiconductor industry.

The National Applied Research Laboratories’ Taiwan Semiconductor Research Center (TSRI) has a complete supply line from student training and design to production. It is expected to sign a contract to set up an office April 18 with the Czech Technical University in Prague. Starting from cultivating chip design personnel, it will be the first overseas design and innovation base. (POC-E)
