President Tsai Ing-wen received American Legion National Commander Daniel J. Seehafer at the Presidential Office Nov. 30 in Taipei City, pledging to continue expanding national defense and veteran affairs cooperation and exchanges with the U.S.
 
According to Tsai, the American Legion and Taiwan’s Veterans Affairs Council have enjoyed a deep friendship spanning over 60 years. The president expressed hope the commander will gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan and witness the results of bilateral cooperation during his first trip to the country.
 
Praising the legion’s efforts to provide comprehensive services and quality care for veterans, Tsai said the VAC has also progressively improved policies to provide better care for Taiwan’s veterans. These include the passage of laws and provisions offering better health care and protecting their education and employment rights, she added.
 
Tsai also thanked the American Legion for its staunch support, citing its resolutions calling on the U.S. government to deepen economic and trade ties with Taiwan.
 
In response, Seehafer said the legion has a long-standing commitment to Taiwan, adding that visits by past commanders since 1953 have been a staple of their Pacific trips. He took the opportunity to thank Taiwan for donating 250,000 masks to the American Legion during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
 
Seehafer said the U.S.-Taiwan relationship is a pillar of peace and a symbol of friendship in the Indo-Pacific, and extended his wishes that two-way ties continue to grow even stronger. (SFC-E)
