President Tsai Ing-wen appointed Alexander Tah-ray Yui as the new Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office representative to the U.S.; while Yui’s former post as head of Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium, went to the current Deputy Foreign Minister Roy Chun Lee, according to the Presidential Office Nov. 29.

Yui served as a vice foreign minister and as director general of the Ministry of Foreign Affair’s Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs, during which tenure he promoted trilateral exchanges among Taiwan, the U.S. and countries in Latin America. Yui was also previously posted to El Salvador, Switzerland, Paraguay and the U.S., the PO said.

The U.S. is Taiwan’s most important partner and the two sides have always enjoyed close collaboration. The president anticipated that Yui’s extensive experience will continue Taipei’s strong bilateral ties with Washington.

According to the PO, Lee is an expert in international economics and was responsible for supervising diplomatic affairs in North America, Europe and in trade. The relationship between Taiwan and European countries is growing ever stronger, the PO said, adding that Lee’s expertise will be leveraged to deepen cooperation with countries across Europe and further enhance Taiwan-EU relations.
