Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Remus Li-kuo Chen attended a reception celebrating the Sultanate of Oman’s 53rd National Day, spotlighting the government’s commitment to expanding partnership with the country.

Speaking at the event Nov. 21 in Taipei City, Chen highlighted that Oman stands at the crossroads linking Eastern and Western civilizations and praised the modernization made under the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

Thanks to cooperation between the Commercial Office of the Sultanate of Oman-Taiwan and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Muscat, Oman, there has been encouraging growth in trade, investment and tourism, Chen said. The sultanate is already Taiwan’s main energy supplier, he said, adding that bilateral trade volume reached US$2.8 billion in 2022, up 50 percent from 2021.

Academic ties are also thriving, the vice minister said, citing exchanges between National Dong Hwa University in eastern Taiwan’s Hualien County and Sultan Qaboos University, the University of Nizwa, Sohar University and the German University of Technology of Oman.

According to Chen, Taiwan and Oman share the same foreign policy ideal of fostering friendship with all. Under Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s Oman Vision 2040 framework, there is great potential for further cooperation in culture, economy, education, investment, tourism and trade between the two sides, he said.

In response, Mohammed Al Baraami, director of Oman’s representative office in Taiwan, said that from January to October this year, bilateral trade volume reached US$2.7 billion, signaling steady growth. Based on the two sides’ shared values and cooperative relationship, relations are expected to continue flourishing, he added.

Over 200 guests attended the event, including officials, diplomats and corporate executives, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. (POC-E)
